Stop the Hebron Fund's oppression of Palestinians

Thank you for taking the time to consider the voices of the people,

For millennia, the holy city of Hebron has been a home to many civilizations and religions. The city is holy to Jews, Muslims, and Christians, and all people have a responsibility to encourage safety and harmony in Hebron.

While the Hebron Fund states that they raise funds for “the improvement of daily life for the residents of Hebron,” the activity of The Hebron Fund encourages violence towards the local Palestinian population.

Every Shabbat (Saturday), Israeli settlers and tourists are led on a tour of the Old City of Hebron. This tour presents a one-sided, racist history of Hebron that portrays Palestinians as evil, and erases both Palestinian Muslim and local Jewish lives and history. Tourists are accompanied by soldiers and Border Police who block off the streets and alleys, frequently impeding freedom of movement for Palestinians. The tour prevents visitors from really understanding the life and history in Hebron, and it perpetuates a false and divisive story about Hebron.

Every Shabbat, it becomes difficult, if not impossible, for Palestinians to go about their daily lives. Israeli soldiers and Israeli border police stop, frisk, and check the identification cards of many people, especially young men. Settlers often chant as they walk through the Old City, scaring children. The tour negatively impacts Palestinian children, women, and men of all ages. It is the collective punishment of a people.

We call on the Hebron Fund to stop these weekly invasions of the Old City of Hebron. We call on those who fund the Hebron Fund to stop financially supporting intimidation and violence. We call on other religious organizations to pressure the Hebron Fund to stop the Hebron tours. We call on all people of faith and conscience to get involved in stopping these tours, and to support freedom of movement for all people in the holy city of Hebron.
